From its name you might think “Syndrome X” is some horrible condition right out of a science fiction movie. As scary as that might be, the truth is even scarier.
In reality, Syndrome X isn’t some alien mutation or new super virus, but rather a disease found in 41 million people in the U.S. From my experience, I’d say that at least half the people I work with have one stage or another of this disease. And the numbers are increasing.
How would you know if you might have Syndrome X? The following are just some of the typical early symptoms:
- You feel sluggish after eating
- You gain weight gradually over time but have trouble losing it
- After you eat you are still hungry or craving something else
- You often feel tired and sluggish regardless of how much you sleep
- You crave sweets, breads, or other carbohydrates
There are all sorts of other symptoms that are associated with it as well. These range from generalized aches and pains (including fibromyalgia) to fuzzy thinking, mood swings and arthritis pain.
If not checked, Syndrome X eventually turns into type 2 diabetes. Why is this a concern? Because type 2 diabetes has a high correlation with heart disease, strokes, cancer and many other unpleasant health problems. Obviously, these kinds of health problems are among the major causes of death.
In addition, Syndrome X creates high amounts of damaging free radicals in your system. These are the substances that speed the aging process by causing damage to your cells and tissues.
This is why I say that Syndrome X can shorten your life. At the very least it dramatically reduces your quality of life. This is also why I like to pay close attention to seemingly minor symptoms in my patients. These ‘minor’ symptoms are really the body’s way of giving us an early warning signal about future problems.
The advantage of paying this kind of attention is that you can stop the problem before it gets out of hand. Just in the same way it’s easier to remove a thorn bush from your yard when it first sprouts, these symptoms give you the opportunity to address potential problems long before they become life threatening.
Of course most of us (I include myself here as well) have the natural tendency to ignore these kinds of minor symptoms. In some ways it seems easier in the moment to just keep moving forward and hoping that we’ll eventually feel better.
If we don’t, we often chalk it up to ‘getting older’ or some such idea. Whenever someone says this to me I always think to myself that getting older is fine, it’s feeling older that isn’t so much fun.
More importantly, what can you do to eliminate or at least reduce the symptoms of Syndrome X?
There are many contributing factors to feeling better, but the most basic and effective things you can do include:
- Exercise regularly
- Eat only whole natural foods
- Drink plenty of water
Just as important as what you do is what you avoid doing. This list includes:
- Avoid refined sugars. It’s best to avoid any form of concentrated sugar, even if it’s ‘natural.’ This includes honey and molasses. For example, dried fruit is much more concentrated that fresh fruit. The same is true for fruit juice, even fresh fruit juice. Most deserts should be avoided as well.
- Avoid refined dietary starches. This includes bread, pasta, cookies, cakes and candies.
- Avoid processed foods. This means almost everything that comes in a can, a jar, a bottle, a box, or a package.
In addition, depending on how your Syndrome X symptoms show up, there may be herbal formulas and other supplements to help you manage the problem. It’s best to consult with someone familiar with natural medicine to determine the right approach for you. In the long run this will save you wasted money experimenting with all the latest ‘miracle’ supplements that may or may not be right for your unique situation.
