These days, doctors are busier than ever.
The result of this is a kind of medical overwhelm. People experience long waits for appointments, limited one-on-one time, and less personal attention. This may explain why many people are not happy with the quality of health care they receive.
But you do not have to accept less than stellar medical care. Here’s how to get the most from your health care visits.
1. Do Research
The internet is a great place to get information about almost anything. Unless you are having an emergency, take time to find out what you can about your symptoms and what they may be telling you. Type your symptoms into a search engine and see what comes up.
This will help in a couple of ways. First, you become more familiar with what the symptoms are telling you. Second, you most likely be able to understand what your doctor tells you if you decide to go in for an appointment.
2. Be Prepared
When you go to the appointment, have as complete a list of symptoms as you can. It may help to write them all down.
Include details like when the symptoms first appeared. Note if there are times during the day the symptoms are better or worse. Mention what you have done that relieved the symptoms. If anything makes symptoms worse, mention that as well.
3. Ask Questions
Each person has a different degree of understanding about health issues. And each doctor may have a different way of describing what the symptoms tell them.
If anything your doctor says is hard to understand, don’t just nod your head in silence. Ask questions! That is the only way to make sure you can take the right action to get better.
But what if your doctor simply does not have time to answer your questions? At that point you may get frustrated. If this happens you have a few good choices.
First of all, mention your concerns to your doctor directly. Let him or her know that you would appreciate answers to your questions. If the doctor cannot or will not take time right then, ask if their nurse or physician’s assistant can answer your questions.
If that is not possible, then you may have to look elsewhere to get your questions answered. Once again, the internet is a good place to look. And since you will likely have a diagnosis from the doctor visit, you can search more precisely than before. You may be able to answer your questions yourself.
Of course sometimes you want more personal attention from your doctor. If you are not able to get this, you may have to search for another physician. If so, be sure to ask family and friends who they recommend. There are certainly doctors near you who will work more closely with you to reach your health goals.
Whenever you see your doctor it is important that you feel like you are getting quality care. If not, taking the steps outlined above will help you improve your health care experience.
All the best to you for your health and happiness,
